Personal Barometer

Multi-media interfaces that quantify direct and indirect demands on regional water resources in domestic, industrial and farm production situations

Scenarios

"Explore your way towards sustainability"(Based, in each case, on "typical" dynamic simulation models of the resource, where outcomes depend on the model specification of natural system(s) and on socio-economic parameter choices)

Virtual Visit

(Some key concepts are already outlined in the presentation of WP2A, previously.  Note that, within each "Virtual World" there will be, somewhere, an appropriate Virtual Library.)

Multi-player game

Constructed, in each case, as a multi-agent simulation model, permitting an individual user to be in an "agent" role and, building on that, permitting several players in the "game" at the same time.
The Personal Barometer (PB) is a stand-alone application designed to calculate per capita and whole household domestic water consumption and provide feedback on the impact of consumption levels based on water use data entered by the user. The SG focuses on the effects of different surface water abstraction licences in terms of their spatial distribution (what river reach are they on?), what use the water is put to (e.g. agriculture, industry, potable?), the volume licensed, the volumes actually taken in recent years and the annual timing (month) of the abstractions. The VV presents the context of real geographically located ‘stations’ from a particular catchment representing either points (e.g. sewage discharge point) or areas (e.g. a stretch of river or a wetland habitat) Actor: HOUSEHOLD or FARM.
The objective of the game is to get your marker out of the maze before your opponent. Players select one of the eight tiles around their marker to try and erase – if they successfully answer a question or complete a challenge in the alloted time, the tile is erased and they can see a new part of the maze.
